​Western NIS Enterprise Fund

Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF) is a $150 million fund that has invested in small and medium-sized companies in Ukraine and Moldova. Proceeds from WNISEF’s equity investments of $1 million to $10 million in size were used primarily for restructuring and expanding the portfolio.

Since inception, WNISEF has invested over $185 million in a broad range of industries with substantial experience in fast moving consumer goods, construction materials, packaging, retail, and financial services.

WNISEF is governed by an independent Board of Directors comprised of leading representatives of the U.S. business community. WNISEF was established by the U.S. Congress and funded by the U.S. government viaUSAID.

As of January 1, 2015, Jaroslawa Z. Johnson was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of WNISEF following the appointment of Natalie A. Jaresko to the Government of Ukraine as Minister of Finance. Ms. Johnson oversees WNISEF’s legacy programs. Horizon Capital, under the stewardship of Lenna Koszarny, Founding Partner and Chief Executive Officer, continues to manage WNISEF’s investment portfolio and operations.

In 2015, WNISEF launched a $35 million legacy program funded by a portion of the profits earned from its investment activities. The goals and objectives of the legacy program are to assist Ukraine and Moldova with further development of sound economic policies and leadership during this critical time in their respective histories.

This legacy program encompasses four main initiatives:

  • Export Promotion Policy Program designed to improve the ability of Ukrainian and Moldovan exporters to access new markets;
  • Local Economic Development Program working to develop innovative market-based solutions linking local government and the business community to improve the provision of services to disadvantaged citizens while supporting the SME sector.
  • Impact Investing Program focused on supporting private enterprises to achieve significant social impact by providing accessible capital, coaching and mentoring; and
  • Economic Leadership Program focused on investing in promising young professionals to develop a deep and broad network of future leaders of Ukraine and Moldova.
